The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, on Tuesday in Abuja said President Bola Tinubu is likely to sign the amended Electoral Act into law before the end of February.
He spoke during an emergency plenary session of the Senate, where lawmakers set up a committee to work with the House of Representatives to align both chambers’ versions of the bill. The move is aimed at resolving differences that followed public reactions to some changes made to the Act.
Akpabio explained that the Senate raised a 12-member committee to meet with their counterparts in the House within a short time. He said the task before the committee is to compare both bills, agree on a single version, and return it quickly for final legislative action.
According to him, if the process is completed within a few days or about a week, the President will be in a position to give assent within the month.
He added that the decision to enlarge the committee came after discussions with Senate leaders and was meant to ensure smooth cooperation with the House of Representatives.
The Senate leadership believes close collaboration between both chambers will help conclude the process without delay and allow the amended law to move forward.
