The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, confirmed that President Bola Tinubu intervened in the political crisis rocking Rivers State and expressed hope that the effort would finally bring the dispute to an end.
Wike spoke to journalists while inspecting ongoing infrastructure projects in the Federal Capital Territory, where he acknowledged that the President held meetings with him, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, and other key leaders from the state to address the lingering political tension.
He explained that Tinubu stepped in as a mediator due to the growing rift between the Rivers State House of Assembly and the governor.
According to Wike, the President acted in a fatherly role to calm tensions and guide all parties toward a resolution that would restore stability in the state.
The FCT minister said the President has shown concern for the welfare of Rivers people and described the latest intervention as the second of its kind.
He expressed confidence that both the lawmakers and the governor would comply with the President’s guidance and bring an end to the prolonged disagreement that has affected governance in the state.
Wike disclosed that he had already advised members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to take the necessary steps in line with the President’s direction. He also said he expects the governor to play his part so that the state can move forward without further political conflict.
While addressing issues in Rivers State, Wike also used the opportunity to review the progress of major projects in Abuja. During the inspection tour, he assessed several road projects to confirm that contractors were meeting expected standards and timelines.
One of the projects inspected was the Arterial Road N5 at Life Camp, also known as Obafemi Awolowo Way, which runs from the Life Camp junction to Ring Road 3. Wike announced that the road construction had been completed, with only finishing works such as walkways left to be done.
He noted that streetlights had already been installed along the route.
The road project, being handled by Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, links Life Camp to the Old Keffi Road through Dei-Dei. It is among several key projects scheduled for commissioning as preparations continue for the 50th anniversary of the Federal Capital Territory in 2026.
Wike said regular inspections would continue, stressing that such visits are necessary to ensure quality delivery and strict compliance with project deadlines by contractors across the capital.
