The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, on Wednesday in Abuja said the dualisation of the Airport to Kuje road and the Kuje to Gwagwalada road will be ready for commissioning in June 2026 as part of events to mark President Bola Tinubu’s third year in office.
He spoke after inspecting the projects and assessing the level of work done so far.
Wike explained that the Airport to Kuje stretch, being constructed by Arab Contractors, has reached about 76 per cent completion.
He said the road is one of the major projects of the FCT Administration because it will improve movement across the territory and reduce pressure on existing routes. According to him, the work has progressed steadily since his last visit, and the contractors have shown commitment to meeting the deadline.
He stated that if the pace continues, the project should be ready either by early June or before the end of the month. The minister added that the road will serve as an alternative route for motorists travelling between Gwagwalada and other parts of Abuja without passing through the busy airport corridor.
On the Kuje to Gwagwalada section, Wike disclosed that the project is close to 65 per cent completion. He expressed confidence that both sections will be delivered on schedule. He noted that the combined progress on the two stretches shows that the contractors are working within the agreed timeline.
The new road network is expected to ease traffic around the airport area, shorten travel time, and improve access to satellite towns. Residents of Kuje, Gwagwalada, and nearby communities are likely to benefit from easier transportation and better connection to the city centre.
The projects form part of the FCT Administration’s plan to expand infrastructure, open up developing areas, and reduce congestion in central Abuja.
With the June target approaching, attention is now on the contractors to complete the remaining work and prepare the roads for inauguration.
