The National Chairman of the Labour Party, Senator Nenadi Usman, and the Acting National Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Benson Upah, on Wednesday in Abuja asked the Department of State Services and other security agencies to arrest the party’s former National Chairman, Julius Abure, over an alleged unlawful entry into the party’s National Secretariat.
They made the demand while speaking with journalists at the Labour Party headquarters.
Usman said Abure entered the secretariat on Tuesday night without approval and allegedly removed official party documents. She described the action as wrong and against proper conduct in any institution. According to her, documents belonging to an organisation must remain in the office for record keeping and continuity.
She explained that once a person leaves office, such an individual no longer has the right to access facilities or take away records. She added that removing official files after leaving a position could affect the smooth running of the party and disrupt its structure.
Usman disclosed that the matter had been reported to security agencies and said she expects them to take action. She expressed concern that failure to act could encourage similar conduct in the future.
The Labour Party chairman also spoke about the party’s current plans, which include reviewing membership records, registering new and old members, and assessing past activities. She said the aim is to strengthen the party across the country.
She noted that the party draws support from workers, traders, and grassroots members and works closely with the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress.
The call for Abure’s arrest comes amid ongoing internal issues within the Labour Party, as different factions continue to contest control and leadership of the organisation. As of the time of filing this report, Abure had not publicly responded to the allegation.
