The African Democratic Congress has received new members from other political parties in Akwa Ibom and Kaduna States as preparations continue for the 2027 general elections.
The defections took place on Saturday in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, and in Lere Local Government Area of Kaduna State, with party leaders confirming the development.
In Akwa Ibom, all 31 chapter chairmen of the Labour Party in the state announced their decision to leave their former party and join the ADC.
The declaration happened during the unveiling of the Obidients movement and the party’s structures in Uyo. The event was attended by Peter Obi and attracted a large crowd of supporters and political actors.
The former Labour Party officials said their decision was based on their belief in Peter Obi’s leadership style and his plans for the country. They stated that they joined the ADC willingly and without pressure or financial inducement.
According to them, they believe Obi has the ability and vision to address the country’s challenges and promote better governance for all Nigerians, regardless of background.
In Kaduna State, more than 23,000 members from the All Progressives Congress, Peoples Democratic Party and Labour Party also left their parties to join the ADC in Zone 1 of Lere Local Government Area.
The move was confirmed in a statement issued by the ADC Coalition Publicity Secretary in the state, Darius Kurah.
The new members were formally received by Bashir Saidu, who serves as the Coalition Co-Chairman of the ADC Kaduna State chapter, along with the party’s National Vice Chairman for the North West, Ja’afar Sani.
Party officials in Kaduna described the development as a new phase for the ADC in the area and said the influx of members would strengthen the party ahead of future elections.
Hafsat Baba, Secretary of the Kaduna State Membership Card Registration Committee, assured the incoming members that they would have equal opportunities within the party. She added that the ADC would continue to promote fairness and inclusive governance in the state.
The wave of defections in both states adds to the changing political landscape as parties reposition themselves ahead of the 2027 polls.
