Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, on Saturday marked his sixth year in office with a thanksgiving service held at the Ecumenical Centre in Igbogene.
The event took place on February 14 and was attended by political leaders, government officials, traditional rulers and other guests. The ceremony was kept simple in honour of the late Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, who recently passed away.
During the church service, Governor Diri remembered his late deputy, noting that they began the administration together in 2020. He read from Psalm 23 and thanked the people of Bayelsa as well as members of other arms of government for their cooperation over the years.
He said their support helped his administration carry out various projects and programmes across the state.
The governor called on residents to remain united and work together for the progress of Bayelsa. He spoke about the state’s natural resources, including oil and gas, and said efforts were being made to improve infrastructure, especially road construction to connect communities and open up rural areas.
He also referred to his political journey, saying his move from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress was part of a divine plan. He urged political leaders and citizens to continue working together and prayed for a future leader who would serve the state faithfully.
The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, attended the event and described Diri’s emergence as governor as an act of God. He recalled past political efforts in the state and said leadership comes by divine will.
Other speakers at the service also commended the governor’s time in office. Dr. Samuel Ogbuku spoke about the peaceful atmosphere in the state, saying it created room for development.
Dr. Mitema Obordor described the administration as focused and productive. Retired Rear Admiral Gboribiogha John-Jonah mentioned the Nembe-Brass road project, stating that it helped improve security and reduce crime in the area.
In his sermon, the Lead Pastor of The Refined People’s Assembly, Daddy-Ken Bitere, preached about God’s faithfulness and said achievements in government are made possible through divine support. He prayed for wisdom and strength for the governor as he continues in office.
Many dignitaries were present at the thanksgiving, including former First Lady Dame Patience Jonathan, members of the National Assembly, state lawmakers, government officials and traditional rulers.
The gathering brought together leaders from different political backgrounds in what was described as a moment of reflection and gratitude for the past six years of governance in Bayelsa State.
