Ahead of the governorship election in Osun State set for August 8, 2026, lawmakers elected under the Peoples Democratic Party at both national and state levels have expressed support for Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party.
The backing was announced after a meeting of party stakeholders held in Osogbo, the state capital.
Governor Adeleke, who moved from the PDP to the Accord Party in December 2025 to contest for a second term, received approval from the lawmakers based on his record in infrastructure, education, healthcare, workers’ welfare, and overall democratic governance in the state.
The lawmakers stated that their support is aimed at ensuring continuity and stability in governance and sustained development for Osun State.
Despite the shift in party allegiance, the legislators assured that the PDP remains strong across all levels, including national and state assemblies, local governments, wards, and grassroots structures.
They reaffirmed confidence in the party leadership at the state level and declared that any alternative claims to leadership without the backing of the official caucus would not be recognized.
The lawmakers also called on President Bola Tinubu to address a local government funding issue, noting that delays in the release of local allocations were causing hardships for teachers, healthcare workers, civil servants, retirees, and traditional institutions.
They urged adherence to legal channels and peaceful resolution of disputes to maintain stability.
The meeting also coincided with the recent defection of five PDP members of the National Assembly to the All Progressives Congress in Osun State, reflecting ongoing political realignments in the run-up to the elections.
The legislators appealed to the people of Osun to remain peaceful and law-abiding while supporting democracy and good governance in the state.
