The All Progressives Congress in Oyo State has decided to use a consensus approach to select new executive committee members for wards and local government councils. The decision aims to ensure unity within the party as it prepares for the next four years of leadership.
The state party announced the plan on Sunday through its Publicity Secretary, noting that all stakeholders from the 33 local government areas met to agree on a peaceful method to conduct the upcoming congresses. The party intends to avoid disputes that affected previous elections in 2019 and 2023.
In the planned process, party members at each of the 351 wards are expected to agree on a harmonized list of leaders. This list will then be submitted for approval during the congress scheduled for Wednesday, February 18, 2026. The same approach will be applied for the local government congresses on Saturday, February 21, 2026.
A five-member Peace Committee has been established to mediate disagreements where consensus cannot be reached. Party leaders encouraged all members to work together to maintain peace and ensure smooth elections, as they prepare for the 2027 general elections.
The consensus strategy is part of the party’s effort to strengthen unity and improve its performance in upcoming elections while avoiding conflicts that could weaken its position. Party officials said that cooperation among members is essential to achieving success at all levels of government.
