2027 Abia Race: Orji Kalu Confirms Opposition to Otti’s Re-election

Former Governor of Abia State and current senator representing Abia North, Orji Uzor Kalu, has said he will work against the re-election of Governor Alex Otti in the 2027 governorship election.

He made this known on Tuesday during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, where he spoke about party loyalty and the coming election.

Kalu, who is a member of the All Progressives Congress, said he remains committed to his party and would support whoever emerges as its candidate in the next governorship race.

He explained that although he has a good personal relationship with Otti, who belongs to the Labour Party, political allegiance must come first. According to him, friendship should not interfere with party responsibility.

He said both men belong to different political parties and should work for their respective platforms. He maintained that being in opposing parties does not mean they must become enemies, adding that peaceful political engagement is necessary for the stability of Abia State.

Kalu also stated that while he would allow the governor to continue his work without interference, he would not support Otti’s return for a second term because his party is expected to present its own candidate in the election. He described his decision as one based on party interest rather than personal issues.

The senator added that his main concern is the progress and peace of Abia State, but insisted that political competition is part of democracy.

The 2027 governorship election in Abia is expected to attract strong interest from major political parties as preparations gradually begin across the state.
