The South East leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party on Tuesday accused the Federal Government of being behind the internal crisis rocking the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The allegation was made in Enugu during the inauguration of the Abia State PDP Caretaker Committee at the party’s zonal office.
Ali Odefa, the PDP South East Vice Chairman, said the disputes within the party were not accidental. He claimed they were part of a deliberate move by the administration of President Bola Tinubu to weaken the opposition and stop the PDP from taking part effectively in the next general elections.
He told party members that the crisis had lasted for years and was driven by forces that do not want the party to grow.
Odefa urged members to stay calm and loyal despite the challenges. He said the party leadership believes the courts will resolve the matter in its favour.
According to him, the judiciary remains the last place the party can seek justice, and there is hope that pending appeals will produce a positive outcome.
He noted that the Court of Appeal had recently consolidated related appeals, and the party is waiting for judgment.
He also charged members of the newly formed Abia State Caretaker Committee to work hard to rebuild and reposition the party in the state. He admitted that the task would not be easy but expressed confidence in the ability of the committee members to restore unity and strengthen the party structure.
After the inauguration, the Chairman of the Abia State PDP Caretaker Committee, Ikegbu Emeka, described the assignment as critical for the future of the party.
He said the PDP in Abia must come together and move beyond past disagreements. He called on aggrieved members to return and join efforts to prepare the party for future elections.
Emeka stated that the period demands sacrifice and unity, adding that the party had faced internal problems in recent times but was determined to overcome them.
He assured supporters that steps would be taken to rebuild trust and reorganize the party ahead of the 2027 polls.
Members of the caretaker committee include Ikegbu Emeka as chairman, Felix Nwagbara as secretary, Chief Fidel Chukwuemeka, Engr. Gladys Okoro, Chief Chijindu Kalu, Kelvin Enyi, Mrs. Ugo Kalu, Barr. Obinna Nwaogwugwu, and Samuel Chukwudi Mike. The event was attended by several PDP stakeholders, including the South East Zonal Secretary, Chief James Ugwu.
The development comes as political activities begin to gather pace across the country in preparation for the 2027 general elections.
