Gunmen on Saturday attacked Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu, the lawmaker representing Ethiope Federal Constituency and daughter of former Delta State Governor James Ibori, during the All Progressives Congress congress in Ethiope-West Local Government Area of Delta State. The incident took place at Ovade, the venue of the party exercise.
The violence began shortly after Ibori-Suenu arrived at the congress ground with her supporters. Armed men reportedly stormed the venue and confronted her group. The attackers were said to have used guns and other weapons during the clash, causing panic among party members present.
Several people sustained injuries in the disturbance, although the exact number was not immediately confirmed. The situation created fear and confusion as supporters and party officials tried to leave the area for safety.
Reports indicate that the assailants attempted to block the federal lawmaker from entering the venue of the congress. However, her security personnel intervened and prevented further harm. Their response helped to repel the attackers and stop the situation from getting worse.
Following the incident, Ibori-Suenu appealed to members of the APC in Delta State to remain calm. She urged party supporters not to allow the violence to divide them as the congress process continues.
The attack adds to concerns about safety during political gatherings in the state, especially during internal party activities.
