The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, on Sunday commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu following the peaceful conduct of the FCT Area Council elections held on Saturday, saying the outcome has made it clear to Nigerians which party is in government and which party stands as the main opposition.
He spoke during a broadcast aired on national television and radio stations in Abuja.
Wike said the orderly manner in which the elections were carried out showed that residents of the FCT believe in democracy and good governance. He stated that voters came out peacefully to perform their civic duty and proved that they could not be misled by political tactics aimed at gaining cheap popularity.
The minister said the results of the election reflected the growing support for the current administration in the territory.
According to him, the development projects executed under President Tinubu have strengthened public trust and increased confidence in the government’s agenda. He added that the Renewed Hope programme has brought fresh belief in the future of the FCT.
He congratulated both the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party for their victories in the elections and commended all candidates who took part in the contest.
He noted that participation by different parties remains an important part of democratic practice, even though only one side can emerge winner at the end.
Wike also praised the Independent National Electoral Commission for conducting what he described as a credible election.
He acknowledged the role of security agencies in maintaining calm across polling units and ensuring that residents voted without fear.
The minister said President Tinubu’s approval of amendments to the Electoral Act shows his resolve to improve the nation’s electoral process. He added that efforts to strengthen democratic institutions will continue under the present administration.
Addressing the winners, Wike urged them to serve the people with humility and commitment. He advised them to focus on improving living conditions in their communities and to justify the trust given to them by voters.
He thanked residents of the FCT, including those in satellite towns, for turning out to vote peacefully. He assured them that the administration would continue to work toward delivering services and development in line with the President’s agenda.
