The All Progressives Congress will on Wednesday inaugurate its 2026 National Convention Central Coordination Committee in Abuja to begin preparations for its next national convention and future elections.
The event will take place at the party’s national secretariat, according to a statement issued on Monday by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka.
The party named former Katsina State Governor and former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Masari, as chairman of the committee.
Former Senate President Pius Anyim will serve as Vice Chairman I, while the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, will act as Vice Chairman II.
The Governor of Imo State and Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum, Hope Uzodimma, was appointed treasurer, and Yobe State Governor Mala Buni will serve as secretary.
The committee has been given the task of organising and coordinating all activities leading to the party’s 2026 National Convention.
The convention is the party’s highest decision-making body after the National Executive Committee and brings together delegates from across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
Delegates usually include members of the National Executive Committee, governors elected on the party’s platform, lawmakers in the National Assembly who belong to the party, state party executives, local government chairpersons and elected representatives from ward and state congresses.
At the convention, the party may elect or confirm members of its National Working Committee, review its constitution, decide on policy direction and political plans, and take decisions on zoning and internal matters.
The gathering often shapes the party’s leadership structure and may influence political alignments ahead of primary elections for key offices.
The last elective national convention of the APC was held on March 26, 2022, at Eagle Square in Abuja. During that event, delegates elected members of the National Working Committee, with Abdullahi Adamu emerging as national chairman.
The 2026 convention is expected to determine whether the current National Working Committee will continue in office or be restructured. The body manages the daily affairs of the party and plays a central role in its operations.
The convention may also serve as a forum for consultations among party leaders as preparations gradually begin for future elections. Issues related to zoning and regional balance are likely to come up, given the party’s tradition of sharing positions across regions.
After its inauguration, the Central Coordination Committee is expected to release a timetable for the convention.
This will include notice of the event, guidelines for delegate accreditation, nomination procedures, venue confirmation and arrangements for security and media coverage.
