The National Assembly has moved its plenary resumption from Tuesday, February 24, 2026, to Thursday, March 5, 2026, in Abuja to allow its committees complete ongoing work on the 2026 budget.
The decision was announced on Monday by the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana.
According to the notice issued by the Clerk, the shift in date became necessary because several committees are still conducting budget defence sessions with ministries, departments and agencies.
Lawmakers were earlier scheduled to return from break and resume plenary on February 24, but the leadership decided to grant more time for the budget review process.
The National Assembly is currently considering the 2026 Appropriation Bill, and many committees are yet to conclude their engagements with government agencies.
These sessions involve scrutiny of proposed expenditures and discussions with heads of agencies to defend their budget estimates before final approval.
With the new adjustment, both the Senate and the House of Representatives will now reconvene on March 5 at 11:00 a.m. to continue legislative activities. The change affects members of both chambers who are expected to take note of the updated date.
The leadership of the Assembly also expressed regret over any inconvenience the postponement may cause to lawmakers and other stakeholders.
Plenary proceedings are expected to resume fully once committee assignments on the budget have been completed.
The development comes at a time when the legislature is focused on passing the 2026 budget, making the committee stage a key part of the lawmaking process before final deliberations in plenary.
