President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday in Abuja accepted the resignation of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and immediately appointed Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police.
The decision followed the submission of Egbetokun’s resignation letter earlier in the day.
Egbetokun, who was appointed in June 2023 for a four-year term expected to end in June 2027, stepped down citing family reasons. His resignation brought an early end to his tenure as head of the Nigeria Police Force.
In a statement released by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu acknowledged receipt of the resignation letter and thanked Egbetokun for his years of service in the police.
The President noted his time in office and his role in managing the affairs of the force during his tenure.
Following the acceptance of the resignation, Tinubu approved the appointment of Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu to take over in an acting capacity.
The appointment takes effect immediately. Disu is expected to lead the Nigeria Police Force while the formal process for confirming a substantive Inspector-General begins.
According to the statement, the President will soon convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council as required by law. The council is expected to consider Disu’s appointment before his name is forwarded to the Senate for confirmation as substantive Inspector-General of Police.
The development comes at a time when the country faces various security concerns.
With the new acting police chief in place, the administration stated its intention to continue efforts aimed at improving national security and strengthening the capacity of the police to carry out its duties across the country.
