Abia State Governor Alex Otti on Friday in Umuahia confirmed that two kidnap attempts occurred in Olokoro and Ubakala, both in Umuahia South Local Government Area, but said security agencies have the situation under control.
He spoke during his February media chat with journalists where he addressed security and development matters in the state.
The governor said he received reports from the Commissioner of Police about the incidents, which happened in the previous week. The suspects were believed to be cattle herders.
He explained that security personnel, including operatives of the Abia State Homeland Security, intervened, forcing the attackers to flee. According to him, the cases were isolated but required firm steps to prevent a repeat.
Otti stated that measures have been put in place to strengthen surveillance and response in the affected areas. He assured residents that law enforcement agencies are monitoring the situation closely to maintain peace.
Beyond security, the governor also spoke about the ongoing reconstruction of Enyimba Hotel in Aba. He said the Abia State Government owns 80 per cent of the hotel, while the remaining 20 per cent belongs to members of the Aba Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture families who invested in the facility.
He disclosed that the state may reduce its stake if investors show interest.
He explained that Radisson Blu has agreed to manage the hotel and lend its brand to the project. According to him, discussions with the international hotel managers took place before renovation work began.
He added that certain standards must be met for the hotel to operate as a five-star facility and carry the brand name. The governor also addressed environmental concerns about the Aba River, where residents have been dumping refuse.
He said the state has a plan to dredge the river to allow proper flow of water. Plans are also underway to develop a leisure and entertainment centre around the area.
He noted that companies that discharge waste into the river would face penalties, as proper waste treatment is now mandatory.
On the airport project initiated by the previous administration, Otti said investigations are ongoing. He disclosed that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has invited individuals linked to funds connected to the project.
He added that the state government is working toward recovering any public funds involved.
The governor said his administration remains focused on security, infrastructure and environmental management as part of efforts to improve living conditions in Abia State.
