The Peoples Democratic Party in the South West, on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State, said no congress has been scheduled in the region and explained that the claim came from persons it described as lacking authority.
The party, through its zonal leadership, reacted after reports and timetables began circulating about planned congresses across the six states in the zone.
The South West Zonal Publicity Secretary, Sanya Atofarati, dismissed the reports and said the party had not approved any state congress in the region.
He stated that the information being shared was not from the recognised leadership of the party and should be ignored by members and the public.
The reaction followed ongoing internal issues within the PDP at the national level, where the party has been divided into two camps.
One group is led by Samuel Anyanwu, while another faction is under Taminu Turaki, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria.
The South West leadership aligned with Turaki made it clear that there was no plan to hold congresses in the zone at this time.
Atofarati explained that five of the six states in the South West already have elected and properly constituted state executives. According to him, these states do not need fresh congresses.
He added that Osun State is the only exception because a caretaker committee was appointed there by the National Working Committee in January 2026 to manage the party’s affairs.
He also addressed the timetable being circulated, describing it as the work of expelled individuals.
He said those behind it had been removed by the party’s national convention, which is the highest decision-making body of the PDP, and therefore lacked the power to organise any congress.
The zonal spokesman said the party under Turaki’s leadership is focused on restoring order and unity within its ranks.
He called on members in the South West to take part in the ongoing membership registration and validation exercise in their wards and local government areas.
He noted that the exercise is aimed at strengthening the party’s structure ahead of future political activities.
The party maintained that any information about a South West congress not coming from its recognised leadership should be disregarded, insisting that no such event has been fixed.
