Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar met with leaders of the African Democratic Congress from the South-East and other well-known Igbo political figures in Abuja on Tuesday night as preparations continue for the party’s 2027 presidential primaries.
The meeting took place at the Abuja residence of Chikwe Udensi behind closed doors. It was part of ongoing consultations within the party as it prepares for its presidential primary and considers possible alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to information released by the ADC on Wednesday, the gathering focused on the party’s direction and plans as the primary season approaches.
Those present included Senator Augustine Akobundu, Chief Chekwas Okorie, former Minister of State for Education Emeka Nwajiuba, Dr Osita Oruche, Prof Onyi Nwagbara, Chief Uchenna Okogbuo, former ADC National Chairman Chief Ralph Nwosu, Hon Uzoma Abonta, Hon Uko Nkole, Etigwe Uwah, Dr Steve Nwadiuko, Chief Morris Eboh, Senator Frank Ibezim, and Dr Dave Eboh.
The meeting comes at a time when political parties are working to meet the timetable set by the Independent National Electoral Commission for the 2027 elections.
INEC recently released a revised schedule, fixing the presidential and National Assembly elections for January 16, 2027, while governorship and State Assembly elections are to be held on February 6, 2027.
The electoral body has directed political parties to conduct their primaries between April 23 and May 30, 2026. It also stated that parties must submit their digital membership registers at least 21 days before holding any primary, congress, or convention. Parties that fail to meet this requirement risk being barred from presenting candidates.
With the deadline drawing closer, consultations such as Atiku’s meeting with South-East leaders form part of efforts within the ADC to prepare for the primary process and the wider election season ahead.
