President Bola Tinubu has approved the posting of 65 Nigerian ambassadors and high commissioners to different countries and international organisations. The decision was announced in Abuja on Thursday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
The postings include both career and non-career diplomats who were earlier confirmed by the Senate in December 2025. According to the announcement, 34 of the nominees are political appointees while 31 are professional diplomats from the foreign service. They have now been assigned to various diplomatic missions across the world.
Among the notable postings, former Minister of Aviation Femi Fani-Kayode has been assigned to Germany, while presidential aide Reno Omokri will serve in Mexico. Former Katsina State Governor Abdulrahman Dambazau will represent Nigeria in China, while Senator Jimoh Ibrahim has been named Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.
Other prominent nominees include former Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, who will serve in Spain, and former Minister of Health Isaac Adewole, who has been posted to Canada. Senator Ita Enang will represent Nigeria in South Africa, while Lateef Kayode Are has been assigned to the United States.
Additional postings show that Senator Grace Bent will serve in Togo and former Enugu State Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi will represent Nigeria in Greece. Aminu Dalhatu has been appointed High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, while former Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency Ayodele Oke will serve in France.
Other non-career ambassadors include Fatima Ajimobi to Austria, Lola Akande to Sweden, Joe-Kyari Okocha to Ireland, and Ibok-Ete Ibas to the Philippines. Paul Adikwu will serve in the Vatican City, while Nkechi Linda Ufochukwu has been posted to Israel.
The list also includes Mahmud Yakubu to Qatar, Yakubu Gambo to Saudi Arabia, Nora Ladi Daduut to South Korea and Kulu Haruna Abubakar to Tunisia. Other postings cover countries such as Hungary, Portugal, Japan, Poland, Australia, Argentina, Russia and Trinidad and Tobago.
Career diplomats were also assigned to various missions. Mohammed Mahmud Lele will serve in Algeria, Shehu Barde in Ghana and Aminu Nasir in Ethiopia. Ibrahim Danlami has been posted to Kenya, Ayeni Adebayo to Belgium and Akande Wahab to Switzerland.
Other career ambassadors will represent Nigeria in countries including Côte d’Ivoire, Niger, Egypt, Jamaica, Zambia, India, Senegal, Chad, the Netherlands and Morocco. Several diplomats have also been assigned to Malaysia, Tanzania, Botswana, Iran, Benin, Lebanon, Italy, Mozambique, DR Congo, Namibia and Mali.
The Presidency stated that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has already received approval from the United Kingdom for the posting of Aminu Dalhatu, while France has also accepted Ayodele Oke as Nigeria’s envoy. Requests for approval have been sent to other host countries as part of diplomatic procedures required before the envoys can assume duty.
The President has also directed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to organise an induction programme for the ambassadors-designate and high commissioners before they begin their assignments.
Nigeria currently maintains diplomatic missions in more than 100 countries around the world, including embassies, high commissions and consulates that represent the country in bilateral and international relations.
The last major ambassadorial appointments were carried out in 2017 during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, leaving several missions without substantive ambassadors for years.
The newly appointed envoys are expected to resume work after completing their orientation programme and receiving approval from their host countries.
