The Federal Commissioner representing Ekiti State at the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission, Omowumi Ogunlola, has said she will not contest for a seat in the National Assembly during the 2027 general elections. She made the announcement on Saturday during a media interaction held in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital.
Ogunlola, who previously served as a member of the House of Representatives, explained that her decision was based on the need to focus fully on her present national responsibility at the commission.
She stated that her role at the commission requires her full attention because of its importance to revenue allocation and fiscal matters that affect states across the country, including Ekiti.
Before the announcement, political observers and supporters had mentioned her as one of the possible candidates who could return to the House of Representatives to represent Ekiti Central Federal Constituency II.
Her previous service in both state and federal positions, as well as her support base in the area, had strengthened expectations that she might re-enter the race.
However, Ogunlola stated that she had decided not to seek the position in the next election cycle. She explained that remaining in her present office would allow her to continue contributing to national assignments that have direct effects on the welfare and development of Ekiti State.
The former lawmaker also disclosed that she had consulted widely before making the decision. According to her, she held discussions with members of her political structure and other stakeholders to ensure that her position was properly understood and that there would be unity among her supporters.
She explained that the consultations were necessary to keep her political allies informed and to maintain stability within her support network. Ogunlola added that every decision she makes in public service is guided by responsibility and by the interest of the people of Ekiti State.
The commissioner also noted that anyone occupying a position like hers must step down before contesting an elective office. She stated that leaving her current assignment at this time could affect the representation of Ekiti State at the commission, especially with important engagements expected in the near future.
According to her, leadership requires careful timing and decisions that place the interest of the people above personal ambitions. She maintained that the development of Ekiti State remains her main priority and that she would continue to serve the state in any capacity available to her.
Ogunlola further revealed that she had informed the Governor of Ekiti State, Biodun Oyebanji, about her decision not to contest the election. She expressed appreciation for the governor’s support, advice and encouragement over time, describing their working relationship as helpful to the progress of the state.
She also thanked her political associates, supporters and members of the All Progressives Congress who have continued to stand by her over the years. Ogunlola assured them that the programmes and initiatives she has been running for the empowerment and welfare of the people would continue.
The commissioner stated that her commitment to the development of Ekiti State remains strong and that she will keep working with other leaders and residents of the state to promote growth and unity in the years ahead.
