Governors elected under the Peoples Democratic Party on Sunday asked party members and supporters to remain calm as the Court of Appeal in Abuja prepares to deliver a ruling on Monday in a dispute affecting the party’s leadership.
The call came as tension grows within the party ahead of the judgment, which many members believe could shape the direction of the PDP in the coming months.
The appeal for calm was made through a statement released by the PDP Governors’ Forum. The forum is led by the Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, and the statement was issued by its Director-General, Dr. Emmanuel Agbo.
According to the governors, party members across the country should act peacefully and respect the rule of law as the court prepares to make its decision. They advised supporters to remain disciplined before and after the ruling while the party leadership studies the judgment and decides on the next step.
The case before the Court of Appeal is part of an ongoing leadership disagreement that has affected the party for several months. The issue has created divisions within the PDP and has drawn attention from political observers who believe the outcome may affect the party’s internal balance.
The governors said the judiciary remains an important institution in Nigeria’s democratic system because it handles disputes and interprets the constitution. They explained that respect for the courts is necessary for the stability of the country’s democracy.
Despite the disagreements within the party, the governors said the PDP still plays an important role in Nigeria’s political landscape. They noted that the party has been involved in governing the country and has also served as an opposition voice at different times in Nigeria’s democratic history.
The governors also encouraged party members who are preparing to contest positions in the 2027 general elections to continue to work through the party’s platform. They advised aspirants and supporters to keep faith in the party while its leadership continues efforts to manage internal issues.
The PDP leadership has been trying to restore unity within the party after months of disputes among members. Political observers say the ruling expected from the Court of Appeal could influence the next phase of the party’s internal politics.
As the date of the judgment approaches, the PDP Governors’ Forum has continued to urge members across the country to remain peaceful and allow the legal process to take its course while the party prepares to respond after the court delivers its decision.
