The faction of the Peoples Democratic Party led by Tanimu Turaki on Monday announced plans to approach the Supreme Court to challenge the judgment of the Court of Appeal on the party’s leadership dispute.
The group made the decision after the appellate court upheld earlier rulings that invalidated the PDP national convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State, in November 2025.
The announcement was made through a statement issued in Abuja by the National Publicity Secretary of the faction, Ini Ememobong, following the delivery of the Appeal Court judgment. The court, in its ruling on several consolidated cases concerning the PDP leadership crisis, agreed with the earlier decision of the Federal High Court in Abuja that the process leading to the national convention did not follow the required legal procedures.
The Appeal Court panel, led by Justice Mohammed Danjuma, ruled that the convention conducted on November 15 and 16 failed to comply with provisions of the Electoral Act, the Nigerian Constitution and the party’s internal rules. Based on this finding, the court declared that the exercise that produced Turaki and members of the National Working Committee could not stand under the law.
In addition to nullifying the convention, the court also upheld the suspension of the party’s National Legal Adviser and other officials connected to the case. The appellate court further dismissed an appeal filed against earlier interim orders issued by a Federal High Court judge during the proceedings.
Following the judgment, the Turaki-led leadership said it had begun consultations with key organs of the party on the next steps. The faction also directed its legal team to begin the process of filing an appeal at the Supreme Court in order to challenge the ruling and seek a final decision on the matter.
The group explained that the enforcement of the court’s decision could create serious difficulties for members of the party across the country. For this reason, it said the Supreme Court should review the matter and give a final verdict that would settle the dispute affecting the opposition party.
The faction also maintained that the legal battle is part of a broader effort to protect the party from individuals it believes are acting against the interests of the PDP while presenting themselves as opposition figures.
The leadership called on party members to remain calm and united while the legal process continues.
It expressed confidence that the Supreme Court would handle the case quickly and provide a conclusive resolution to the ongoing leadership crisis within the party.
