The National Executive Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party on Wednesday held its 106th meeting in Abuja and reviewed the party’s internal affairs, preparations for future political activities and the current situation within its structure.
At the end of the meeting, party leaders announced several decisions aimed at strengthening the organisation and preparing it for upcoming electoral processes.
During the gathering, members of the committee commended the National Caretaker Working Committee led by Abdulrahman Mohammed for managing the party’s affairs during the current transition period.
According to the committee, the caretaker leadership has continued to guide the party while efforts are being made to reorganise its internal structure.
The committee also reviewed the ward and local government congresses already conducted across the country. Members expressed satisfaction with the way the exercises were carried out and expressed confidence that the upcoming state congresses would take place peacefully and in line with the party’s constitution and guidelines.
As part of preparations for the party’s convention, the committee approved the conduct of zonal congresses which are expected to hold within two weeks. These activities form part of the steps leading to the national convention where party leaders will make further decisions about the party’s structure.
The committee also discussed recent court judgments involving the party’s leadership. Members noted that the decisions of the Court of Appeal had confirmed the authority of the National Caretaker Working Committee.
According to the committee, the court rulings have helped bring stability to the party and clarified issues relating to its leadership.
During the discussions, party leaders also called for reconciliation among members. They advised leaders and stakeholders involved in disputes to settle their differences through dialogue and internal party mechanisms.
The committee also urged members to avoid further legal actions, including attempts to continue the dispute at the Supreme Court, in order to protect the unity of the party.
The meeting also approved the expansion of electronic membership registration within the party. The initiative is expected to improve the management of the party’s membership database, increase participation at the grassroots level and support better organisation within the party.
Party leaders also confirmed that the national convention of the PDP will take place on March 29 and March 30. During the convention, delegates are expected to elect a new National Working Committee in line with the provisions of the party’s constitution.
In addition, the committee reviewed the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission for the 2027 general elections. The committee noted that the Electoral Act requires the electoral body to issue a notice of election at least 300 days before the polls.
In line with this requirement, the party also approved its own timetable for various internal processes leading to the elections.
According to the schedule, the PDP will submit its membership register to the electoral commission on April 10, 2026.
Primaries for the State Houses of Assembly are expected to take place on May 2, followed by primaries for the National Assembly on May 9. Governorship primaries are scheduled for May 16, while the presidential primaries are expected to hold on May 25.
The committee advised all organs of the party and its members across the country to begin preparations in line with the approved schedule. Party leaders also stressed the need for strict compliance with the timetable and other legal provisions guiding the electoral process.
During the meeting, the committee also condemned the attack carried out by suspected hoodlums on members of the party during recently conducted congresses in Oyo State. The committee described the incident as unacceptable and contrary to democratic practice.
Security agencies were urged to investigate the attack and ensure that those responsible are identified and prosecuted.
Party leaders ended the meeting by calling on members and stakeholders across the country to remain united and disciplined as the party continues preparations for the remaining congresses, the national convention and other political activities.
The committee also reaffirmed the party’s commitment to democratic governance, national unity and the welfare of Nigerians.
The meeting concluded with party leaders expressing renewed determination to strengthen the organisation and prepare it for greater participation in the country’s political process.
