Former Speaker of the House of Representatives and former Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, has left the Peoples Democratic Party and moved to the African Democratic Congress. He announced the decision in the early hours of Thursday through a statement shared on his social media platform.
Tambuwal explained that he had submitted a written resignation letter to his ward chairman before formally joining the ADC together with his political associates and supporters. His move comes after years of involvement in the PDP, where he played major roles during his political career.
According to the former governor, the decision followed a period of reflection and consultations with political allies. He pointed to ongoing internal disputes within the PDP as the main reason for leaving the party. He noted that frequent disagreements among leaders and widening divisions had continued to affect unity within the party.
Tambuwal also acknowledged the role the PDP played in shaping his political path. During his time in the party, he served as Speaker of the House of Representatives and later became the Governor of Sokoto State, completing two terms in office.
Despite this long relationship, he said the growing challenges within the party made it difficult for him to remain a member.
He explained that the internal crisis and leadership conflicts had weakened the party’s direction over time.
These issues, according to him, made it necessary for him to look for another political platform where he could continue his political activities.
The former governor said he chose the African Democratic Congress because he believes the party can provide a stronger platform for democratic development in the country. He stated that the decision was guided by his belief that Nigeria needs a political structure built on integrity, accountability, inclusion, and a clear plan for national growth.
Tambuwal also reaffirmed his commitment to democratic values, justice, and unity across the country. He stated that his political efforts would continue to focus on these principles as he begins a new chapter within the ADC.
His defection adds to recent political movements within the opposition space, as several notable figures have recently joined the ADC. Among them is former presidential candidate Peter Obi, whose move to the party has also drawn attention to the platform ahead of future elections.
Tambuwal’s exit from the PDP is expected to further shape political alignments as parties prepare for the next electoral cycle in Nigeria. His move may also influence political dynamics within both the PDP and the ADC in the coming months.
