President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed all political appointees under his administration who plan to contest in the 2027 general elections to step down from their positions on or before March 31, 2026, in Nigeria.
The decision was communicated through a circular issued by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation as part of preparations for the upcoming elections.
The directive affects ministers, ministers of state, special advisers, senior special assistants, special assistants, personal assistants, directors-general, and heads of government agencies, parastatals, and commissions, as well as other political appointees working under the presidency.
These individuals are expected to submit their resignation letters within the given deadline if they intend to take part in party primaries or run for any elective office.
The instruction was conveyed through the office led by George Akume, with administrative handling by senior officials in the General Services Office. It follows the provisions of the Electoral Act and aligns with the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission for party primaries ahead of the 2027 elections.
The move is aimed at ensuring that public office holders do not use their positions to gain advantage during the electoral process. It is also intended to allow a fair environment for all aspirants who will participate in the elections.
With political activities gradually building up towards 2027, the directive marks one of the early steps taken by the current administration to regulate participation in the electoral process and ensure that those seeking office comply with existing laws.
