Ahead of the 2027 general elections, key members of the Peoples Democratic Party held high-level meetings across different locations as internal peace talks within the party slowed down.
The meetings involved Seyi Makinde, Bala Mohammed, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and Seriake Dickson, with discussions believed to be linked to political plans ahead of the next presidential election.
The meetings took place on Sunday in Bauchi and later in Kano, where the leaders gathered during activities marking the Eid al-Fitr celebration. Although the visits were presented as festive engagements, sources close to the discussions revealed that political consultations were also part of the agenda, especially regarding alliances and possible strategies for 2027.
The development comes at a time when reconciliation efforts between PDP governors and the camp loyal to Nyesom Wike have failed to make progress. The ongoing disagreement has split the party into factions, each laying claim to leadership and control ahead of the party’s planned national convention.
The governors’ group had earlier conducted a convention in Ibadan in November 2025, where Tanimu Turaki and others were elected into key positions. However, Wike’s supporters later set up a caretaker committee to manage party affairs, leading to further disputes and legal battles over legitimacy.
Court rulings delivered in March 2026 invalidated the Ibadan convention, stating that the process did not follow legal and party guidelines. Despite this, both factions have continued to push their positions, while also expressing interest in reconciliation, though recent events suggest little progress has been made.
During the meetings, Makinde maintained that aligning with Wike’s group would amount to supporting Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections. He insisted that members are free to choose their political direction but should be clear about their stand.
On the other hand, representatives of the Wike-backed group said efforts to settle differences are still ongoing, adding that disagreements within the party can still be resolved through dialogue.
The Kano gathering, which included Peter Obi, also attracted party supporters and political stakeholders from across the country. Sources indicated that beyond the celebration, discussions focused on future political alignments and possible collaborations among opposition figures.
As preparations for the 2027 elections continue, the PDP remains divided, with both sides holding separate positions on leadership, convention plans, and alliances.
