A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party has stated that it will not support President Bola Tinubu in the next general election, saying such a move would go against the role of an opposition party.
The position was shared by the group’s spokesperson, Ini Ememobong, during a live programme, where he explained that backing a candidate from another party would weaken the PDP’s purpose.
The faction also expressed hope that ongoing efforts to settle internal disputes within the party would be guided by clear thinking rather than emotions. According to the group, any agreement reached must help rebuild the party and keep it active as an opposition force.
Meanwhile, signs of peace talks have begun within the PDP as leaders from different sides continue discussions ahead of the party’s planned national convention. Tanimu Turaki confirmed that fresh talks started earlier in the week and are already showing progress.
He said party members are aware of the time limits set by electoral laws and are working towards unity before key deadlines. He also noted that all sides are ready to make adjustments if needed to restore peace in the party.
Turaki added that once an agreement is reached, court cases linked to the crisis would be withdrawn. He expressed confidence that the issues dividing the party can be resolved and insisted that efforts are ongoing to bring all members together before the convention.
