The Peoples Democratic Party faction backed by Nyesom Wike on Sunday in Abuja conducted its national convention where it selected a new National Working Committee to manage the party’s affairs. The event took place at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium and drew over 2,500 delegates from different states.
During the gathering, party members approved a 19-member leadership team in line with the party’s constitution. Abdulrahman Mohammed emerged as National Chairman, while Samuel Anyanwu was confirmed as National Secretary alongside other officials who will oversee party activities for the next four years.
The convention was attended by delegates from several states, including Kebbi, Ekiti, Bauchi, Benue, and Ogun, while some states such as Edo and Gombe stayed away due to ongoing disagreements.
In Sokoto, division within the party was also seen as one group attended the convention despite a boycott announced by the state leadership.
Key figures present at the event, including Bukola Saraki and Okezie Ikpeazu, called for unity among members and urged the party to move past internal conflicts. They noted that rebuilding trust and working together would help the party prepare for future elections.
The convention followed months of crisis within the party, which led to the emergence of rival factions. While one group had earlier held a separate convention in Ibadan, the Wike-backed faction proceeded with its own process after court decisions affected the earlier exercise.
Despite the divisions, leaders at the Abuja convention said efforts to reconcile all sides are still ongoing. They encouraged members to put the party first and work together to restore stability and strengthen its position ahead of the 2027 general elections.
