The Independent National Electoral Commission on Wednesday removed the names of the National Working Committee of the African Democratic Congress led by David Mark from its official portal, following a directive from the Court of Appeal in Abuja.
The decision was taken after the court ordered all parties involved in the dispute to maintain the situation that existed before the crisis began until a final ruling is delivered by the Federal High Court. The electoral body said its action was to comply with that directive and avoid taking steps that could affect the outcome of the case.
The crisis within the party has led to rival groups laying claim to its leadership, with one faction led by Nafiu Bala Gombe also seeking recognition. The commission, however, stated that it would not recognise any group at this stage, as doing so would go against the court’s order.
INEC explained that although the names of the committee members led by Mark were uploaded to its portal in September 2025, the case challenging the leadership had already been filed earlier that same month. As a result, it decided to reverse the action and return to the previous position until the court settles the matter.
The commission also announced that it would suspend all dealings with the party’s factions. This includes monitoring meetings, congresses, and conventions, as well as receiving official communication from any of the groups, until the legal dispute is resolved.
The leadership struggle within the party has led to several court cases, with each side seeking control of the party’s structure ahead of the 2027 general elections.
INEC said it would remain neutral and continue to follow court orders while urging political actors to avoid actions that could disrupt the electoral process.
