On Thursday in Abuja, the African Democratic Congress called on the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Joash Amupitan, to resign from office, warning that he should be removed if he fails to do so.
The demand was made during a world press conference addressed by the party’s national chairman, David Mark, who said the call followed concerns about the commission’s recent actions and its ability to handle future elections.
According to the party, the leadership of the electoral body has lost the trust of its members, especially in light of ongoing disputes affecting the party and decisions taken by the commission. The party said these developments have raised doubts about whether the commission can conduct a credible general election in 2027.
The ADC also urged Bola Ahmed Tinubu to remove the INEC chairman and other national commissioners if they do not step down voluntarily, stating that the current leadership of the commission should not remain in office under the circumstances.
The party maintained that its position is based on what it described as a lack of confidence in the electoral body’s leadership and its handling of political matters involving parties. It added that the situation could affect preparations for future elections if not addressed.
The call is coming amid a growing crisis within the ADC and recent actions by INEC concerning the party’s leadership, which have led to legal battles and disagreements among party members.
