On Friday in Abuja, the Labour Party informed the Independent National Electoral Commission of its plan to hold congresses and a national convention, with April 28, 2026 set for the main event in Umuahia, Abia State.
The party disclosed this through a statement issued by its media aide, stating that a formal letter had already been sent to the electoral body on March 31, 2026. The notification outlined a full schedule covering ward, local government, and state congresses, which will lead to the national convention where new leaders are expected to be elected.
According to the timetable, ward congresses will take place nationwide on April 23, followed by local government congresses on April 24 and state congresses on April 25. All the activities are scheduled to begin at noon across the country.
The party explained that the notification was done in line with existing electoral laws, guidelines, and constitutional provisions that require political parties to inform the electoral body ahead of such activities.
It also recalled that the earlier schedule for the congresses had been postponed to allow more members to take part, especially due to the ongoing digital membership registration exercise.
The national convention, which will be held at the International Conference Centre in Umuahia, is expected to produce new national executives and shape the party’s leadership ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The move comes as the party seeks to reorganise its internal structure, with attention already turning to how the outcome of the congresses may affect control and influence within the party.
Earlier plans to begin the process in March were shifted, and a committee was set up to oversee the conduct of the congresses and ensure wider participation among members.
