The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, on Sunday ordered an investigation into officers captured in a viral stop-and-search video in Lagos, directing them to report to the Force Headquarters in Abuja for questioning and possible disciplinary action.
The directive was made public by the Force Public Relations Officer, Aliyu Giwa, following widespread reactions to the video shared online. The incident reportedly took place in the Satellite Town area, where the officers were seen carrying out a roadside stop-and-search operation.
In the footage that surfaced on Saturday, the officers were observed stopping a vehicle, asking those inside to step out, and taking one individual aside for further checks. The video drew criticism from members of the public who raised concerns about the conduct of the officers during the operation.
As a result, the police authorities have asked the officers involved to appear before the appropriate authorities on Wednesday to explain their actions. The move is part of efforts by the Nigeria Police Force to review the incident and determine if any rules were broken.
The police spokesperson stated that the action taken shows the force’s resolve to maintain discipline and proper conduct among its personnel. He also called on officers across the country to carry out their duties responsibly, respect the rights of citizens, and avoid actions that could damage public trust.
He added that the police would apply necessary sanctions based on the outcome of the investigation, while assuring Nigerians that the force remains committed to justice, accountability, and professionalism in its operations.
