A senior member of the African Democratic Congress has said the party will not stop its planned congresses and convention despite the ongoing crisis within its leadership and the position taken by the electoral commission.
Speaking during a programme on Channels Television, Ralph Nwosu explained that the party is already taking steps through legal means and engagement with the commission, but will not allow any interference to stop its activities ahead of the 2027 elections.
The party has been facing internal disagreements, which led to different factions and a decision by the electoral body to withdraw recognition from some leaders until the court settles the matter. Despite this, Nwosu maintained that the party followed all legal steps in organising its activities.
He explained that the party had earlier submitted its timetable and plans to the commission and received approval. Based on this, he said the party has not broken any law and can continue its activities whether or not officials of the commission attend.
According to him, the congresses have already started in some areas, and the national convention is still expected to hold as planned, where the party will confirm its decisions and processes.
He also stated that the party intends to continue notifying the commission about its activities, including future plans for selecting candidates for the next general elections. He added that if there are issues with acceptance, the party will make its position known to the public through the media.
The development comes as the ADC continues to deal with internal divisions, with different groups making claims over leadership. However, the party leadership under Nwosu’s position appears determined to move forward with its political timetable despite the uncertainty.
