A faction of the African Democratic Congress in Adamawa State on Monday announced the suspension of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, as internal disputes continue within the party.
The action was made public in Adamawa by the faction’s chairman, Raji Sulaiman Zumo, who said the decision was taken by his group amid ongoing leadership struggles in the party at both state and national levels. The development adds to the growing tension within the ADC as different groups lay claim to authority.
The crisis within the party has been deepening, with another faction led by Nafiu Bala Gombe also asserting control over the national leadership structure. The disagreement among party leaders has created uncertainty about who holds legitimate authority within the organisation.
The situation has already drawn the attention of the Independent National Electoral Commission, which earlier withdrew recognition of the leadership associated with former Senate President David Mark pending the resolution of ongoing disputes.
The suspension of Atiku and Lawal by the Adamawa faction reflects the widening divisions within the party as it prepares for future political activities. The internal conflict is expected to shape the party’s direction ahead of the next general elections, as different camps continue to struggle for control.
