On Tuesday in Abuja, the African Democratic Congress began accreditation for its national convention at the Rainbow Event Centre in Garki, as over 3,000 delegates from across Nigeria gathered for the event under tight security.
Delegates drawn from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory arrived in large numbers, dressed in different outfits that reflected the diversity within the party.
Security officials screened attendees at the entrance before allowing access into the venue, while the accreditation process was handled by a committee led by Austin Akobundu.
Party officials explained that the number of delegates assigned to each state was based on size, to allow fair participation in the convention. The National Organising Secretary, Chinedu Idigo, said the gathering would conclude internal congresses, approve a new party constitution, and prepare the party for upcoming primaries.
However, the party raised concerns over difficulties faced in securing a venue for the convention. According to officials, several event centres and hotels reportedly declined to host the gathering after learning it was for the ADC. The party also said earlier attempts to use public venues like Eagle Square and the Velodrome did not succeed.
Despite these challenges, the party confirmed that it moved ahead with the Rainbow Event Centre after meeting all necessary requirements, even after initial concerns about possible withdrawal of the facility.
The convention is expected to play a key role in shaping the party’s structure and plans ahead of future elections, as members gather to make decisions on leadership and internal reforms.
