The Labour Party on Thursday rejected reports claiming it had backed President Bola Tinubu for re-election in 2027, saying no such decision had been taken by the party.
The clarification was made by Abubakar Yawale, who also leads the Northern Labour Party Chairmen Forum. He said the statement linking the party to Tinubu’s second-term ambition did not come from any recognised organ of the party.
He explained that the claim was traced to Abayomi Arabambi, whom the party said had been expelled earlier and no longer had the right to speak on its behalf.
Yawale stated that only the party’s authorised structures could take decisions on endorsements or alliances, adding that the Labour Party had not discussed or approved support for any candidate ahead of the next general election.
The party also addressed questions about its former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, noting that he remains free to pursue his political plans on any platform of his choice.
It added that the party still has capable members who can contest future elections under its platform, and it remains open to presenting candidates when the time comes.
The statement urged Nigerians to ignore the report of endorsement, describing it as misleading and not reflective of the party’s position.
The development comes amid ongoing internal disagreements within the Labour Party, where different groups have made conflicting claims about leadership and direction since the 2023 elections.
