On April 17, 2026, in Nigeria, the African Democratic Congress criticised Bola Ahmed Tinubu, accusing him of paying more attention to political matters while citizens face rising hardship and insecurity across the country. The party made its position known through a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi.
The reaction followed recent comments credited to the president in which he reportedly dismissed opposition parties and made remarks about their activities.
The ADC said such statements showed a disconnect from the daily struggles of Nigerians, especially at a time when many households are dealing with increasing prices of food, transportation, and other basic needs.
The party also raised concerns about security, pointing to ongoing reports of attacks and abductions in different parts of the country. It stated that the government had not done enough to address these challenges, leaving many citizens worried about their safety.
On the issue of its national convention, the ADC denied claims that the event was held on the street. It described the claim as false and linked it to misinformation. The party also alleged that opposition groups are facing restrictions in accessing public venues, noting that spaces meant for all citizens are becoming difficult for them to use.
The ADC further criticised the role of the current administration in governance, stating that actions by the president suggest interference in areas meant for other arms of government. It added that such conduct raises concerns about how state institutions are being managed.
The party also referred to recent political moves involving Muhammadu Buhari, saying the president’s approach appears inconsistent as political activities ahead of the next election begin to take shape.
According to the ADC, many Nigerians are currently dealing with economic pressure, insecurity, and increasing public debt. The party said it remains focused on presenting itself as an alternative option in future elections while calling attention to the current situation in the country.
