On April 18, 2026, in Abuja, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, said Rotimi Amaechi and David Mark cannot secure electoral victories for the African Democratic Congress in Rivers and Benue states during the 2027 general elections. Wike said Amaechi does not have the political strength to win Rivers State for the ADC, pointing to past elections where the former minister, despite holding key roles in the All Progressives Congress, was unable to deliver the state. He recalled previous contests where he defeated political opponents even when they had strong federal backing.
He referred to the 2015 and 2019 election periods, noting that Amaechi played major roles at the national level, including leading presidential campaign efforts, yet the APC did not secure control of Rivers State. Wike said these past outcomes show that the state does not easily align with such political expectations.
The minister also questioned the strength of the ADC in Benue State, stating that David Mark, who is linked to the party’s leadership, may not be able to influence results there. He pointed to political developments in the state to support his claim.
Wike’s comments come as political activities begin to build up ahead of the 2027 elections, with parties and key figures positioning themselves across different states.
