The Nigeria Democratic Congress has informed the Independent National Electoral Commission that it will hold its National Convention on May 9, 2026, as part of preparations for the 2027 general elections, while also revising its full schedule of activities.
The decision was communicated in a letter dated April 15, 2026, sent to INEC by the party’s National Working Committee. The correspondence, signed by National Chairman Cleopas Moses Zuwoghe and National Secretary Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu, explained that the timetable was adjusted after discussions at the party’s National Executive Committee meeting held on March 25, where an earlier draft had been reviewed.
According to the updated plan, the party has already begun activities nationwide, including electronic membership registration and mobilisation efforts. The registration exercise is expected to end on April 29, 2026, and the updated membership list will be submitted to INEC on the same day in line with electoral guidelines.
The party outlined that its congresses will start with ward-level exercises on May 1 across the country, followed by local government congresses on May 2. State congresses are scheduled for May 4, while zonal congresses will take place on May 6.
In addition to the convention timetable, the party also released dates for its primaries.
It scheduled State House of Assembly primaries for May 22, National Assembly primaries for May 24, and governorship primaries for May 25, 2026.
The party further fixed May 29, 2026, for another national convention where candidates who emerge from the primaries will be formally ratified.
The Nigeria Democratic Congress also requested that INEC officials be present to monitor all stages of its activities, stating that the party is committed to following the provisions of the Electoral Act as it prepares for the upcoming elections.
