Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi met behind closed doors with Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed on Thursday in Bauchi, sparking fresh interest over possible political discussions ahead of the 2027 elections.
Obi arrived at the Government House and proceeded into a private meeting with the governor at the Presidential Lounge, where both leaders held talks away from the public. Details of the meeting were not immediately made known, as the discussion was still ongoing at the time the report emerged.
Though the purpose of the meeting was not officially disclosed, sources within the Government House said the talks may be linked to recent political developments and possible alignments ahead of future elections. Both men were expected to address journalists after the meeting.
The meeting comes amid growing political movements involving opposition figures and speculation over coalition talks ahead of 2027. Obi has been linked with opposition consultations in recent months, while Bala Mohammed has also remained at the centre of discussions about possible political realignments.
The Bauchi governor, who chairs the Peoples Democratic Party Governors’ Forum, had recently spoken about the African Democratic Congress as a possible political destination during a meeting with a delegation from the party led by former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal.
Days later, Mohammed also hosted the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Nentawe Yilwatda, alongside Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf, a development that raised further questions about his political direction.
Thursday’s meeting between Obi and Mohammed has added to ongoing interest around opposition consultations, especially as political actors begin positioning ahead of the next general election.
