Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has thrown his support behind Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat as his preferred successor for the 2027 governorship election in the state.
The endorsement followed a private meeting at Lagos House where Hamzat formally informed members of the State Executive Council and key leaders of his intention to seek the governorship ticket.
The meeting brought together influential party figures, including members of the Governor’s Advisory Council, as discussions focused on the coming political transition in the state.
After the meeting, Sanwo-Olu said leaders present supported Hamzat’s ambition and viewed him as experienced enough to take over the leadership of the state. The governor pointed to Hamzat’s long involvement in government and his familiarity with the workings of the administration.
The endorsement is expected to shape early political alignments within the All Progressives Congress in Lagos as preparations gradually begin ahead of the 2027 polls.
Sanwo-Olu also linked the political partnership between himself and Hamzat to the influence of President Bola Tinubu, noting the long-standing relationship that has shaped leadership in the state.
With the deputy governor now openly in the race and enjoying support from key figures, attention is likely to turn to how other aspirants within the ruling party respond as the succession battle develops.
