The Nigeria Democratic Congress on Friday started its first nationwide congresses across the country as part of preparations for its national convention scheduled for May 9, 2026, in Abuja. The process is being carried out to build the party’s structure and choose its leaders at different levels.
The party, through its Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Abdulmumin Abdulsalam, announced that the exercise began with ward and polling unit congresses taking place on May 1 and May 2. This will be followed by local government congresses fixed for May 4, as the party moves step by step toward its first national gathering.
The congresses are designed to allow members participate in the party’s internal process and help shape its leadership ahead of the convention. At the end of the exercise, the party is expected to conclude major decisions about its structure and direction.
Preparations for the national convention have already been completed, with the event set to hold in Abuja. Party members from across the country are expected to attend, alongside officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission who will monitor the process in line with electoral laws.
Security agencies have also been informed to ensure safety during the activities, as the party prepares to host delegates and other participants at the convention venue.
The leadership of the party expressed confidence that its officials at both state and national levels will carry out the congresses in line with the party’s rules and guidelines. The exercise marks a key moment for the party as it works to establish itself and strengthen its presence ahead of future political activities.
