Kenneth Okonkwo, a member of the African Democratic Congress, on Wednesday in Nigeria responded to Senate President Godswill Akpabio’s claim about the opposition, saying the National Assembly under Akpabio is no longer effective, during a reaction to recent political comments made at the Senate.
The exchange followed a statement by Akpabio during plenary, where he described the ADC coalition as finished after some lawmakers left the party for others. His comment drew attention across political circles and led to reactions from opposition figures.
Speaking during an interview on television, Okonkwo rejected the claim and defended his party, stating that the ADC remains active and focused on its political goals. He argued that the party still represents progressive ideas and cannot be dismissed based on recent defections.
Okonkwo turned his criticism toward the leadership of the National Assembly, saying it has not lived up to expectations under the current Senate President. He pointed to what he sees as a lack of attention to the concerns of Nigerians, especially at a time when many are facing economic hardship.
He also questioned the focus of the Senate leadership, saying more attention should be given to national issues rather than political attacks on opposition parties. According to him, the role of lawmakers should be centered on addressing the needs of citizens and ensuring proper governance.
The development adds to the growing tension between members of the ruling party and opposition figures as political activities continue to build ahead of the 2027 general elections, with both sides exchanging strong words over recent events in the National Assembly.
