On Wednesday in Nigeria, a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party aligned with Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde criticised the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over comments he made during a recent media appearance, accusing him of making reckless statements and acting without restraint.
The group, in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, reacted to Wike’s public outing by describing his conduct as inappropriate and lacking proper behaviour expected from a public office holder.
It also claimed that the appearance was funded with public resources and did not reflect responsible leadership.Instead of responding to the details of the minister’s claims, the faction said it chose to apologise to Nigerians for its past support for Wike, recalling that he had previously held positions such as governor and now serves as a minister.
The group said it now regrets giving him political backing, adding that his recent actions have brought discomfort to many observers.The faction also advised individuals who believe they were targeted or defamed by Wike’s remarks to seek justice through the courts, maintaining that every citizen must be accountable under the law.
On party matters, the group dismissed claims about the existence of a “National Leader” role within the PDP, stating that such a position is not recognised in the party’s constitution. It added that ongoing activities within the party, including preparations for primaries, sale of forms, and plans for a national convention, would continue without disruption.
The statement further linked Wike’s recent comments to possible frustration over his limited influence in shaping decisions within the party, especially in relation to the choice of its presidential candidate.
It also addressed legal issues raised by the minister, noting that it is waiting to receive certified copies of court rulings connected to the matter, while calling on Wike and those associated with him to give clear public explanations regarding the issues in question.
