Popular Nollywood actor Alex Ekubo has died at the age of 40, with news of his death confirmed on Tuesday by some of his colleagues in the Nigerian film industry, including Funke Akindele, Bolanle Ninalowo and Godwin Nnadiekwe.
The actors reacted with emotional messages on social media as they mourned the movie star and reflected on their personal relationship with him. Funke Akindele spoke about trying to reconnect with him before his death and remembered the moments they shared together.
Ninalowo also expressed sadness over the development and prayed for strength for the late actor’s family and friends.
Godwin Nnadiekwe described the news as painful and difficult to accept, recalling conversations and memories he shared with Ekubo before his death. As of the time the reports emerged, members of the actor’s family had not released an official statement explaining the cause of death.
Before the announcement of his death, concerns had already grown among fans after the actor returned briefly to public view following months away from social media. Ekubo had remained inactive online since December 2024, leading to questions from followers about his condition and whereabouts.
A recent video that surfaced online later drew more attention after the actor was seen spending time with children while appearing slimmer and quieter than many people remembered him. The clip quickly spread across social media, with many fans reacting emotionally and discussing the visible changes in his appearance.
Ekubo was also known for speaking openly about his personal life, especially issues surrounding marriage and relationships. Before his death, he had explained in one of his social media posts that his focus was more on building financial success in the movie industry than getting married.
His relationship with US-based model Fancy Acholonu also attracted public attention in the past after their planned wedding was called off in 2021. Acholonu later apologised publicly to the actor and admitted that her actions during the breakup period were driven by emotions. She also spoke about still caring deeply for him despite their separation.
