The Presidential Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, questioned the credibility of former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi over his promise to serve only one term if elected president in 2027.
Onanuga raised the issue through comments shared on his social media platform, where he referred to Obi’s political history and past movement across different political parties. According to him, Obi’s record in Nigerian politics has created doubts about whether his latest political promise can be trusted by voters.
The presidential aide recalled Obi’s previous association with the All Progressives Grand Alliance, where he served as governor of Anambra State. He claimed that Obi had once pledged loyalty to the party before later leaving it for other political platforms over the years.
The comments followed recent political developments involving Obi and former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, who reportedly moved to the Nigeria Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 presidential election. Reports indicate that both politicians may contest on a joint ticket under the NDC platform, with Kwankwaso expected to serve as running mate.
During the party’s national convention held in Abuja on May 9, the NDC announced that its presidential ticket had been zoned to the southern region for a single term before returning to the North in 2031.
Political observers believe the arrangement is aimed at convincing northern voters that Obi would respect the one-term agreement if elected president.
The latest exchange adds to growing political discussions ahead of the 2027 elections, as parties and major political figures continue consultations, alliances and public campaigns across different regions of the country.
