According to the notice issued by the Labour Party leadership, the committee will oversee the screening of aspirants contesting for presidential, governorship and National Assembly positions.
The panel is expected to examine documents submitted by aspirants and confirm that all candidates meet the requirements stated in the party’s constitution, the Electoral Act 2026 and the regulations issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
The committee will be chaired by Nenadi Usman, while Iheanacho Obioma will serve as secretary. Other members of the panel include Oluchi Okpara, Mohammed Salisu, Martina Umana, Deborah Yusuf, Chibuzo Okereke and Dr Olu Ayewo.
The party explained that the committee would recommend qualified aspirants for participation in the primaries after completing the screening process. The Labour Party leadership added that the panel has a duty to ensure fairness and proper compliance as political activities ahead of the 2027 elections continue to gather pace across the country.
The party also released part of its timetable for the primaries. According to the schedule, governorship and House of Assembly aspirants will appear before the screening committee on May 20, while aspirants contesting for National Assembly and presidential positions will be screened on May 22.
The Labour Party urged members of the committee to carry out their assignment responsibly and maintain transparency throughout the exercise. The development comes as political parties across the country continue consultations, screenings and preparations ahead of the next general elections.
