2027: INEC receives Adebayo as SDP presidential flagbearer

The Social Democratic Party, SDP, has submitted the name of Adewole Adebayo to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election after the party concluded its convention and primary election in Bauchi State.

The submission was made through a letter sent to INEC by the party’s National Secretary, Olu Agunloye, following the SDP convention and direct primary election held on May 9, 2026, at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium in Bauchi.

According to the party, the convention and primary election were conducted peacefully, with Adebayo emerging as the only aspirant for the presidential ticket. Delegates and party members at the convention backed him to fly the party’s flag in the next presidential election.

The SDP informed INEC that Adebayo had officially emerged as the party’s presidential candidate and requested the necessary nomination forms needed to complete the process for the 2027 election.

The party also asked the electoral commission to provide documents connected to candidate nomination, including Forms EC9, EC9A, EC9B, EC9C, EC9D and EC9E.

Adebayo had previously contested as the SDP presidential candidate during the 2023 general election. His emergence at the Bauchi convention came without opposition after no other aspirant joined the race for the party’s ticket.

The development marks the beginning of the SDP’s preparations for the 2027 presidential contest as political parties continue to conclude conventions, primary elections and nomination processes ahead of the polls.
