Former Kaduna Central senatorial aspirant, Yerima Shettima, has withdrawn from the race for the 2027 Senate seat under the All Progressives Congress and declared support for candidates produced by the party ahead of the general elections. He announced his decision during a press conference on Sunday after days of consultations with political associates and party stakeholders.
Shettima said his withdrawal followed the position taken by the APC concerning the Kaduna Central senatorial contest. According to him, he decided to step aside in the interest of party unity and stability rather than continue with actions that could create division within the ruling party.
The former aspirant explained that his decision should not be viewed as a sign of weakness or pressure but as a commitment to discipline and loyalty to the APC. He said he remains fully committed to the growth and success of the party and will continue to support its activities ahead of the 2027 elections.
He also appealed to his supporters and members of his political structure to remain calm and work together with candidates chosen by the APC. He urged party members to place the interest of the party above personal ambitions in order to strengthen the APC before the next general election.
Shettima further called for reconciliation among aggrieved aspirants and party loyalists in Kaduna State following complaints that trailed some of the recent primary elections. In recent weeks, several APC members in the state have raised concerns over alleged irregularities and manipulation during the selection of candidates for different political offices.
Despite the disagreements, party leaders have continued efforts to unite members and reduce tension within the APC across Kaduna State. The party has repeatedly urged dissatisfied aspirants to seek peaceful resolution and avoid actions that could weaken its chances during the elections.
During the briefing, Shettima appreciated members of the Capacity Movement led by Sani Shehu Sado, alongside members of his campaign team, for standing by him throughout the political process. He also restated his support for President Bola Tinubu and Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani as preparations for the 2027 elections continue.
His withdrawal is part of the ongoing political changes taking place within the APC after the conclusion of several primary elections across the country. Many politicians are now aligning with party decisions while efforts continue to maintain unity ahead of the national polls.
