The All Progressives Congress has chosen Kingsley Chinda as its governorship candidate for Rivers State ahead of the 2027 general election after the completion of the party’s primary process held on Thursday in Port Harcourt.
The result was announced by the chairman of the APC Governorship Primary Election Committee and returning officer, Bitrus Kwamoti, at the party secretariat after collation officers submitted results from the 23 local government areas of the state.
According to the committee, Chinda contested as the sole aspirant in the primary and secured a total of 268,497 votes during the exercise. After reviewing the outcome and confirming compliance with party rules and election guidelines, the committee declared him winner of the primary and confirmed him as the party’s candidate for the governorship election.
The emergence of Chinda attracted attention because of the political atmosphere in Rivers State and ongoing alignments within the APC. The contest had generated interest due to the continued political developments in the state and the role of party stakeholders linked to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
There had also been discussions around the political direction of Governor Siminalayi Fubara following reports suggesting that he did not participate in the APC governorship primary.
With the conclusion of the primary election, the APC has now formally presented Chinda as its flag bearer for the 2027 governorship contest in Rivers State.
Party members and political observers are expected to shift attention toward preparations for the general election as political activities continue to build across the state.
